Specimen Requirements

 

Submit only 1 of the following specimens: 

 

Plasma

Draw blood in a green top lithium heparin tube (plasma) or a light green gel seperator tube (plasma). Spin down and send 0.5 mL (minimum volume: 1 full, lithium heparin MICROTAINER®) plasma refrigerated. Protect specimen from light. Avoid hemolysis.

Note:  

  • Indicate plasma on the request form.
  • Label specimen appropriately (plasma).

 

Serum

Draw blood in a plain, red top tube or a gold top tube. Spin down and send 0.5 mL (minimum volume: 1 full MICROTAINER®) of serum refrigerated. Protect specimen from light. Avoid hemolysis.

Note: 

  • Indicate serum on request form.
  • Label specimen appropriately (serum).

0-1 month:  0.0-8.0 mg/dL

≥1 month:  0.0-1.5 mg/dL

≥18 years:  0.0-1.0 mg/dL

Note:  Bilirubin, indirect is calculated by subtracting bilirubin, direct from bilirubin, total.
