Specimen Requirements

Acceptable Catheter Specimens:

Broviac^TM, central, CVP, Hickman^TM, peripheral arterial, Swan Ganz^TM, or umbilical hyperalimentation

1. Cleanse skin around catheter site with alcohol.

2. Aseptically remove and clip 5 cm of distal tip of catheter.

3. Place specimen in a screw-capped, sterile container.

4. Do not allow catheter tip to dry out.

5. Label container with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.

6. Maintain sterility and forward promptly at ambient temperature only.
